Description
One of the most popular Helleborus in the world, ‘Anna’s Red’, a member of the Frostkiss Series, is a hybrid cross of Helleborus lividis, H. niger and H. x hydridus. It was released in 2013 by RD Plants in the UK and was named after author and plantswoman Anna Pavord. Adored for its incredibly floriferous bloom, attractive foliage and robust growth, Anna’s Red features abundant, saucer-shaped, ruby-red flowers with a crown of contrasting bright stamens occurring from late winter well into spring. Unlike some varieties, many of the long-lasting large flowers of this one are outward facing and held on sturdy reddish stems which make them perfect for cutting and use in floral arrangements and bouquets. Nectar rich, the flowers offer emerging winter bees an essential food source at a time when not much else is blooming in the garden. The flowers stems rise above very attractive leathery, silver-veined, deep green evergreen foliage that is deer and rabbit resistant. Virtually problem-free and exceptionally long-lived and easy to grow, this first class delightful hardy flowering wonder thrives in partially shaded garden beds, even under the canopies of large trees, as well as in container gardens for situating on patios, porches, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a clump 15 tall with flowers to 24 inches and spreading to form a clump 24 or more inches wide, Anna’s Red Helleborus is ideal for use as an accent in smaller spaces and containers or in groupings, massed as a groundcover in landscape and woodland borders, or as a border along walkways and paths. Perfect under large shade trees, decks, covered porches and any other shady location. Don’t think you have any shade? Look on the east side of your home. A fine addition to shade gardens, winter gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, red theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 24 inches apart for mass plantings; 36 inches or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences
Anna’s Red Helleborus is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade to shade. Though Helleborus will tolerate mostly sun in cool-summer climates, we think they look and perform their best with part shade to full shade, which makes them perfect for planting under tall decks, large shade trees and other shady areas. Morning and/or evening sun or all-day filtered sun is fine. Direct afternoon sun, especially in USDA Zones 7 to 8, is not suggested. Plant with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
