Description
Regarding foliage color, the Ariadne Japanese Maple is perhaps one of, if not the most, unique. With Ariadne, you truly don’t know what colors she will display on her deeply lobed, reticulated leaves, so it would be wrong for us even to attempt to tell you what they will be. You can check out all the photos and captions on this page to see the many variations. We can say, however, that whatever colors are displayed, they are absolutely amazing and beautiful, and they can change from year to year. Based on our observations and those from many other Japanese maple enthusiasts, the foliage colors will depend on several different factors, including sun exposure, temperatures, and soil fertility. Trees in more shade tend to produce lighter shades ranging from white, cream, soft pink, soft yellow, soft orange, and green shades, with orange to scarlet red shades in fall. Trees that receive more sun tend to display darker and warmer shades of pink, peach, yellow, reddish, bronze, and green, with more intense orange and red shades in fall. Some say the best colors come with partial shade, with morning sun and afternoon shade, while others rave about the colors produced with more sun. Regardless of the colors, the foliage stays healthy in our gardens throughout the season. With an upright growth habit of 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide when all grown up, the captivating Ariadne is a good fit and spectacular display as a focal point specimen in smaller garden spaces or in containers for situating on or around patios and other outdoor living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Ariadne Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, in larger landscape spaces, groupings of three are spectacular. Two can be used to frame an entrance.
Suggested Spacing: At least 15 feet apart for space between trees
Note: One Japanese maple can make a landscape if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when selecting companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won’t interfere at all with your tree.
Growing Preferences
Though delicate-looking, Japanese maples are very easy to grow and are long-lived trees. Container culture can extend their useful range, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai. How to Plant A Japanese Maple Tree In A Pot
Japanese Maples are understory trees in their natural habitat, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ariadne will grow in shade or sun, though some say the best foliage colors come with part shade.
Japanese maples will grow in most any average garden soil. They prefer moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic, so make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
