Description
For those who love blackberries it doesn’t get much bigger and better than ‘Big Daddy’, a thornless and self-fertile Blackberry variety that produces abundant HUGE fruits packed with sweet flavor and healthy nutrients. The fruits begin to appear in mid summer and continue coming for months, July to September in our north-central Georgia area. They are excellent for fresh eating right of the bush, in pies and other deserts, for preserving jams and jellies or as a great topping for cereal, yogurt, and ice cream. This blackberry grows well in the ground or pots and its self-fertile so you only need one. That said, two or more will enhance pollination resulting in heavier fruit yields.

Growing Preferences
Big Daddy Blackberry is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average or better fertility and will produce the most flowers and fruit when growing in a site that provides 5 or more hours of direct sunlight per day. That said, a blackberry bush will produce good crops even when grown in shade, which is something no other common fruit plants will do. Blackberries will grow reasonably well in most soil types except for very compacted clay or light chalky soil. In these soils it’ll be worth your time to mix in lots of organic compost to condition the soil and add beneficial nutrients and bacteria plants need to grow healthy. Blackberries grow and produce the best fruit in well-drained but moist fertile soil that is rich in organic matter with a pH of 5.5 to 7.0. They like the soil to hold a good supply of water, especially when the fruits are developing in summer, but not so much water that the soil stays constantly soggy or wet.
