Description
Bronze Beauty Cleyera is a large shrub or small tree that features attractive, glossy evergreen foliage. Glossy, light bronze new growth during spring matures to a rich dark green in summer and then back to bronze for the fall and winter. Small, creamy white flowers appear in late spring to early summer followed by red holly-like berries that persist through fall and winter. If you are searching for a dense growing screen plant or hedge that performs well in the shade, Bronze Beauty is an excellent selection, maintaining its compact and tidy form requiring little to no pruning.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 10 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide, Bronze Beauty Cleyera is ideal for use as an accent, to frame corners, or to fill large spaces between windows or against open walls in home foundation plantings It also serves as a very attractive evergreen hedge or background in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders. Remove lower branches and you have a very attractive small tree useful as a specimen in sunny to partly shaded areas. A fine addition to tropical look gardens and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 5-6′ for solid hedges; 12′ or more for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Cleyera variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Bronze Beauty Cleyera are easy to grow in a range of soils and full sun to part shade. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil however are exceptionally tolerant of dry soil conditions when established. They do not require pruning, however can be pruned to a formal shape or to form a small tree.
