Description
An easy-to-grow and vigorous vine that can grow up to 25 feet long or high to quickly cover an fence, arbor, trellis or other structure, the Cascade Hops features attractive foliage and unusual flowers. It is commercially grown for the female fruits which are used by breweries to preserve and flavor beer, and if you’re a home brewer you can use it as well. The yellow-green male flowers bloom in catkins. Female flowers and subsequent seeds are born in cone-like structures which mature in late summer and persist on the plant through fall. Strobiles are typically collected in September to October with the seeds dried for use in the manufacture of beer. The flowers have a citrusy fragrance and are attractive to butterflies while adding lightly bitter flavors to beer. This plant was named for the Cascade Mountain Range.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing vigorously up to 25 feet in length/height, Cascade Hops is not a plant for the mailbox. It requires a larger structure such as an arbor, pergola, tall pole, fence or larger trellis that can support the length of the vine.
Growing Preferences
Cascade Hops is exceptionally easy to grow in a wide range of well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. After quickly establishing itself, it has moderate drought tolerance and cold and and heat tolerant don’t faze it. It has no insect or disease problems. Can be cut back to the ground after going dormant in fall or winter and the vines will quickly regrow in spring.
