Christmas Fern (Polystichum Acrostichoides) – 1 Gallon Pot

A robust and very hardy North American native fern, the Christmas Fern was named such because its foliage stays green right through the holiday season. It forms a very attractive fountain-like clump of upright arching fronds with glossy blue-green leaflets. Christmas Fern is very easy to grow in heavy to partial shade so is a wonderful texture plant in woodland or shade gardens or in containers. In the wild you might see it growing on shady slopes or other well-drained areas. It does not like wet feet so make sure to plant it in sites with well-drained soil. You might be happy to know it is deer resistant and will grow under black walnut trees. 

Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, the Christmas Fern is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or mass planted in shady woodland or landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Looks great round or near the garden pond or other bodies of water and beneath the canopies of large trees. Also an excellent choice on shady slopes or streambanks, where you might find it growing in the wild. Just make sure its permanent home gets no direct afternoon sun. Filtered all-day sun or morning or evening sun are okay. A fine addition to native plant gardens, woodland gardens and shady rock gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 18 to 24 inches inches apart for mass planting; 48 inches or more apart for space between plants
