Description
Discovered by Stephen Kristoff in Englishtown, NJ as a witches broom, which is a chance dwarf mutation growing on a larger growing variety, the ‘Englishtown’ Japanese Maple is a red-leaved dwarf upright cultivar that might reach 8 to 10 feet in height with a somewhat narrow vase shape 5 to 6 feet or so wide at top. Its smaller stature makes it a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces or in pots, planters and other containers that can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting or living spaces. The small 5-lobed palmate leaves emerge bright red quickly transitioning to dark maroon-red tones. In cooler northern zones of its range the foliage holds its darker red color well through the summer however might become a burgundy-green in the South. Either way it puts out bright red new growth in summer. Cooler temperatures in fall bring a spectaular display of glowing, bright scarlet-red shades. Similar to to the Bloodgood Japanese Maple but at a quarter to a third the size!
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its beauty, the Englishtown Japanese Maple is best used in smaller garden spaces as a focal point specimen. With its smaller stature, it is perfectly suited for growing in containers situated on patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. How to Plant A Japanese Maple Tree In A Pot
Suggested Spacing: 7 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape…that is, if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won’t interfere at all with your tree.
Growing Preferences
Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are very easy to grow. In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally most varieties prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, Englishtown is one that will tolerate full sun.
Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
