Description
If you’re looking to brighten up a shady area in your garden, meet ‘Fire Island’, a hosta lily with leaves that emerge screaming yellow on red stems from the base of the ground up into the leaves – a truly stunning contrast! In midsummer, hummingbirds will love the lavender flowers that rise on tall scapes above the mounds of corrugated leaves with distinctly rippled margins. A vigorous grower that thrives in the shade.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense mound 18 to 24 inches tall and up to 3 feet wide, Fire Island Hosta Lily is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, massed as a groundcover in landscape borders, or as a border along walkways and paths. It has been so reliable and such a strong performer for us that we have no problem at all suggesting it for use as an accent or in groupings in home foundation plantings. It is perfect under large shade trees, decks, covered porches and any other shady location. Don’t think you have any shade? Look on the east side of your home. Also nice in pots, planters and other containers and a fine addition to mixed hosta gardens, woodland gardens, and the hummingbird garden.
Suggested Spacing: 24 to 30 inches apart for mass plantings; 4 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences
Fire Island Hosta Lily is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade to shade. It prefers the shade, and will practically grow in the dark, so is perfect for planting under tall decks and large shade trees where not much sun shines. That said, morning or evening sun or all-day filtered sun is okay. Direct afternoon sun can scald the leaves, especially in warmer climates.
