Description
Kent Beauty is an ornamental Oregano that certainly lives up to its name. Although the foliage is aromatic, it is not of the quality expected for culinary purposes and is usually not used in cooking. What it lacks in flavor, it entirely makes up for in beauty. Everything about this plant is difficult to describe. It is a spreading perennial plant to maybe 12 inches tall and 18 inches wide with wiry stems clothed in silvery blue-green, eucalyptus-like leaves. In early to midsummer, chains of delightful mauve-pink bloom-like bracts similar in appearance to hops form at the tips of every stem on the plant. The flowers can be cut and hung to dry for use in crafts. It can be grown as a groundcover or low border in garden beds, or used as a spiller over walls and the edge of containers. The secret to the best success with it is well-drained soil that never stays constantly soggy, and six or more hours of sunlight daily. Kent Beauty is one of those plants you’ll always look forward to its bloom from midsummer well into fall, and is a captivating plant that is sure to be a conversation piece.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a spreading mound 8 to 12 inches tall and 18 inches wide, Kent Beauty Oregano is ideal as an accent or spiller plant in small garden spaces and containers, or to drape over walls. It is also lovely as a groundcover or border along paths and walkways. Because it tolerates dry shade and poor soil, it is ideal for growing in rock gardens. It is a fine addition to pink theme gardens, cottage gardens, butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, and xeric gardens (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 15 to 18 inches apart for groupings; 36 inches or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Kent Beauty Oregano is very easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and six or more hours of sunlight daily. Well-drained soil is a must as it doesn’t like constantly soggy or wet soil.
