Description
A distinctive North American native perennial wildflower, Geum triflorum, commonly known as Prairie Smoke, is adored for its whispy seedheads. It forms a mound of attractive semi-evergreen to evergreen fern-like foliage 6 to 10 inches tall and 18 inches wide in green shades that turn to red, purple, and/or orange shades in fall. In late spring through early spring, abundant flower stems 12 to 18 inches tall bearing clusters of lovely reddish-pink nodding flowers shaped like rose buds rise above the foliage mound. As beneficial pollinators fertilize these flowers, they slowly turn upright forming wispy silvery-pink 3-inch plumes that look like smoke rising and wafting away from the plant. The entire flower stem can be cut and dried for use in flower arrangements. Just hang cut stems upside down in a warm, dry place until dry. Loving the sun and drought tolerant when established, Prairie Smoke is perfectly suited for dry areas of the perennial garden or rock gardens.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Prairie Smoke Geum is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and container gardens or in groupings or drifts in larger garden spaces. It is a fine addition to rock gardens, antique gardens, pink theme gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, and beneficial pollinator gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 18 inches apart for solid groupings; 30 inches apart for space between plantsÂ
Growing Preferences
Prairie Fire Geum is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained to dry soil of average to low fertility in full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Flower stems can be cut and dried for use in floral arrangements. The foliage often stays evergreen through winter; however, plants can be cleaned up if needed in late winter prior to the emergence of new spring growth.Â
