Description
One of the most unique dwarf Japanese Maples that will always draw attention of guests to any garden, ‘Kurenai Jishi’, commonly called “Red Lion,” is a beautifully structured dwarf tree with terrific foliage. Its stems are densely clothed in crinkled and twisted leaves that emerge an intense deep red in spring with brighter red new leaves. During summer the leaves become green with muted shades of red turning to spectacular shades of orange and red in fall. At 4 to 5 feet tall and maybe 3 feet wide at 10 years of age, and maybe twice that size when all grown up, Red Lion is one of the most desirable maples for bringing the essence of Japan to small garden spaces, rock gardens, fairy gardens and containers where it is sure to be a conversation piece.
Named by Masayoshi Yano, one of the top Japanese maple experts in Japan, ‘Kurenai’ translates to “red” and ‘Jishi’ to “lion.”
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Red Lion Japanese Maple is best used as a specimen in small garden spaces and containers that can be situated on patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the unique foliage can be enjoyed from close up. That said, it can be planted in spaced groupings where space allows. Container culture can extend the useful range of Japanese Maples. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai.
