Description
Discovered in 1970 in Japan, but not commercially released there until 2008, this phenomenal Japanese Maple with a look like no other has finally made it to the United States. Most of us maple enthusiasts know the vast majority of weeping cultivars come with deeply divided lacy leaves, but not this rare and unique Acer sieboldianum. ‘Seki No Kegon’ sports large, 7 to 9 lobed, orbicular leaves on gracefully cascading branches providing a very lush and flowing appearance in the garden. The handsome leaves emerge a soft green in spring transitioning to darker green shades by summer and then to brilliant shades of red, orange and yellow with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. Speaking of cooler temperatures, Seki No Kegon is one of the more cold hardy selections, tolerating temperatures down to -30F in USDA Zone 4. Growing in a broad mound of lovely sweeping curves, you might expect it to reach 4 to 5 feet tall and wide in 10 years and double that at maturity. New and different than any other Japanese maple, this curving beauty is sure to be a captivating specimen in the garden.
Note: Young Seki No Kegon trees will have a more -semi-pendulous look but will cascade more heavily as they grow.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Seki No Kegon Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape or in pots as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. A fine addition to Asian and Zen gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a stand alone specimen

Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape…that is, if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won’t interfere at all with your tree.
Growing Preferences
Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow. Container culture can extend their useful range. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai.
In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, there are many Japanese maples that will grow in full sun, of which Seki No Kegon is one.
Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
