Description
When you have as many varieties of Japanese maples growing in your gardens as we do, it’s hard to pick a favorite…even a top 5. That said, based on its hardiness, handsome stature and truly outstanding foliage colors through the seasons, the Shindeshojo Japanese Maple would make our Top 5. In early spring the absolutely mesmerizing, brilliant reddish-rink leaves emerge, gradually transition to a darker pinkish-red. By summer the foliage usually turns to green shades with flushes of pinkish red new leaves. We say “usually” because for some reason unknown to us, in some summers the foliage will turn creamy white with pink accents, or mottled green and white, or almost all salmon-pink. Cooler temperatures in fall bring lovely golden yellow shades that gradually turn to orange and red shades. A relatively fast growing upright tree adding 12 to 15 inches in height per year, Shindeshojo can reach a height of 15 to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide or so. The tree has a beautiful classic branch structure providing interest during winter.
Shindeshojo will thrive in full sun to part shade in USDA Zones 5-9. That said, in hot-summer climates of the South, we suggest some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours when the sun is most instense.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Shindeshojo Japanese Maple is best used as a specimen or in containers to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, you can plant several in a grouping or use two to frame an entryway.
Suggested Spacing: At least 18 feet apart for space between trees
Container culture can extend the useful range of Japanese Maples. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai. How to Plant A Japanese Maple Tree In A Pot
Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape…that is, if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won’t interfere at all with your tree.
Growing Preferences
Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow in the ground or in containers.
In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. There are many sun-tolerant Japanese Maple varieties, of which Shindeshojo is one.
Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
