Yet another stunning Helleborus from breeder Hans Hansen, Shotgun Wedding is one of the most eye-catching Lenten Rose, a work of art that always grabs the attention of guests browsing our gardens. This beauty produces large double white flowers from late winter through mid-spring, with each petal artistically brushed heavily with deep burgundy spots and flecks. The long-lasting flowers provide welcome color in the garden when not much else is blooming and are excellent for cutting and use in arrangements or to float in a bowl of water. Upright, evergreen foliage is a handsome, rich green. You might be happy to know that Helleborus are deer and rabbit-resistant, heat and cold-tolerant (-30F), and will thrive in full to part shade and mostly sun in cooler climates. In our Georgia Zone 8 gardens, we always plant Helleborus in shady sites because we think they stand out and shine the most there.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 18 to 24 inches tall and about 2 feet wide over time, the Shotgun Wedding Helleborus is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, massed as a groundcover, or as a border along walkways and paths. It is perfect under large shade trees, decks, covered porches, and any other shady location. Don’t think you have any shade? Look on the east side of your home. It is also lovely in pots, planters, and other containers and a fine addition to shade, cutflower, and woodland gardens.

Growing Preferences

Shotgun Wedding Helleborus is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade to shade. Though Helleborus will tolerate mostly sun in cool or mild summer climates, we think they look and perform their best with part shade to full shade, which makes them perfect for planting under shade trees, tall decks, and other shady areas. Morning and/or evening sun or all-day filtered sun is fine. Direct afternoon sun, especially in USDA Zones 8 to 9, is not suggested for Helleborus. Plant Helleborus with the top of the root ball at ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with organic plant food.
