Selected by hybridizer Hans Hansen for its notable vigor, large numbers of blooms per plant, and rich and unique flower colors, ‘Spanish Flare’ bears an incredible abundance of large, 3-inch diameter, saucer-shaped soft-yellow flowers with a burst of deep maroon-red flares surrounding the nectaries at the center. Certainly a novel color pattern for Lenten Rose and a stand-out in the garden from late winter through mid spring. Unlike some varieties, many of the long-lasting large flowers of this one are outward facing and held aloft on sturdy stems that make them perfect for cutting and use in floral arrangements and bouquets. Nectar rich, the flowers offer emerging winter bees an essential food source at a time when not much else is blooming in the garden. You might be happy to know that that Helleborus are deer and rabbit resistant. Virtually problem-free and exceptionally long-lived, this first class delightful hardy flowering wonder thrives in partially shaded garden beds, even under the canopies of large trees, as well as in container gardens for situating on patios, porches, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces.

Spanish Flare Helleborus is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade to shade. Though Helleborus will tolerate mostly sun in cool-summer climates, we think they look and perform their best with part shade to full shade, which makes them perfect for planting under tall decks, large shade trees and other shady areas. Morning and/or evening sun or all-day filtered sun is fine. Direct afternoon sun, especially in USDA Zones 7 to 9, is not suggested. Plant with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
