Description
Translated to English, ‘Tsuma Gaki’ means “painted nails,” and this adorable Japanese maple lives up to her name. In early spring, soft palmate leaves with yellow-green finger-like lobes are painted in lovely red at the tips and around the edges, holding their color through early summer. During summer, the leaves turn to bright green, often taking on bronze-burgundy shades by the end of summer and finally turning to vibrant crimson red shades in fall. A small tree adding maybe 8 to 12 inches in height and width per year, Tsuma Gaki might reach 10 feet tall and equally as wide in 12 to 15 years, developing a broad rounded crown. Tsuma Gaki is a fine addition to small to medium-sized garden spaces where the larger growing maples just won’t fit, and of course, Asian theme gardens. It is also suitable for growing in pots, planters, and other containers that can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Tsuma Gaki Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, where space allow you can plant in groupings of three or use two to frame an entrway.
Suggested Spacing: At least 15 feet apart for space between trees
Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape…that is, if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when selecting companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won’t interfere at all with your tree.
Growing Preferences
Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees, and are very easy to grow. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai. How to Plant A Japanese Maple Tree In A Pot
In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally Tsuma Gaki Japanese Maple prefers to be grown in similar conditions. Avoid direct afternoon sun on this variety. That said, we hear it will tolerate full sun in cool-summer climates.
Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
