Description
The Yewtopia Plum Yew is the South’s answer to English shrub yews! With a slightly upright, vase-like growth habit, this plum yew is heat tolerant, drought resistant, shade loving, low maintenance, insect and disease resistant, and deer turn their noses up to it! What more could we ask for in an evergreen shrub?
The handsome, dark green, delicate, need-like foliage of Yewtopia provides a unique texture in the garden year-round and contrasts nicely with the foliage textures and colors of many other types of plants. Being a shade-loving and drought-tolerant plant makes it a perfect selection for planting under shade trees or in shady home foundation plantings. Morning sun is okay.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Yewtopia Plum Yew has many uses in the shady to partially shaded landscape. Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and wide (depending on pruning), its smaller size fits nicely as an accent or specimen in smaller landscape spaces and also does quite well in medium to large size pots, provided the drainage is good. It is perfect for use as a foundation plant in shady home foundation plantings. In larger landscape borders we use it in small to large groupings or mass plantings on embankments, as a natural or formal hedge, or under large shade trees. A fine addition to Asian themed gardens, woodland gardens, as an evergreen accent or background in perennial shade gardens, or in the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Spacing Recommendations: 3 to 4 feet apart for solid hedges or mass plantings, 8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Plum Yew is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Exceptionally easy to grow, the Yewtopia Plum Yew likes a well-drained soil, even bone dry soil is okay when the plants are established. It prefers part sun to shade. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun is fine. Does not require pruning however responds well to it for shaping purposes. The best time to prune is in early spring before the first flush of new growth.
